Skyhigh Tandems Crew

The Crew who you can expect to take you on the ride of your life at Johannesburg Skydiving Club

Dave Van Der Merwe - Tandem Master / Camera Guy
Tandem Master
Dave started his skydiving career with an Accelerated Freefall (AFF) course at JSC in 2002 under the guidance of his instructors Simba and JVA. He quickly progessed in the skydiving world and this showed in the many accolades he achieved. At the 2004 South African National Skydiving Championships he was awarded bronze and silver medals in the 2-way and 4-way Formation Skydiving (FS) events respectively.Representing South Africa as part of the South African National FS team at the Skydiving World Championships in Gera, Germany in 2006 was a particularly special achievement for Dave. He also did his 1000th jump in 2006 and, as tradition dictates, was honored with a pie in the face.
In 2008 Dave joined 3 of his friends (who were missing some team members due to an ill-timed regulatory infringrement) in the Junior 4-way FS event at the SA National Championships. This team promptly walked off with gold medals. Dave also took his Open Class 4-way and 8-way FS teams all the way to the top earning another 2 gold medals at the National Skydiving Championships.
He then proceeded to the 2008 World Skydiving Championships with his Open Class FS team to be ranked no.7 in the world.Besides competing in skydiving, Dave has a passion for the technical perfection of the sport which has earned him his Jump Master rating, PRO (demonstration jumper) rating, self-proclaimed Camera God rating, PASA D-license and Tandem Master rating. Dave cares greatly for the skydiving community and it's people. More often than not he will be the heart of the party at the dropzone. He also found the love of his life, Yvette, at the dropzone who now assists him with the smooth operation of SkyHighTandems.Dave is happiest when he's swooping his pocket-sized parachute across the lawns of the dropzone at insane speeds. His claim to fame is only having had one parachute malfunction even though he has made in excess of 1,600 skydives.

Helge Harms - Camera Guy
Helge.jpg
Originally a KwaZulu-Natal boy, Helge moved up to Jo'burg in 1995, did his first skydive in Wonderboom when he was 17 years old and absolutely loved it! School, studies and early work life unfortunately only allowed him to skydive very little but in 2006 he took the sport up more seriously and found a second home at JSC. The skydiving community in South Africa has really become like an extended family to him. He's a static-line baby and proud of it! Since 2006 he has done around 500 skydives at JSC. His preferred skydiving discipline is Canopy Formation which his brother got him into as soon as their skydiving careers allowed and they've had some truly unforgettable jumps together.
Freefall Videography and Photography have always fascinated Helge - this is one way to take your awesome skydiving experiences home and relive them over and over again. Tandem Videography is special to him because he gets to live the first-jump angst, exhilaration, craziness, freedom and expression with each and every Tandem passenger and record these experiences for them. Having been there himself, knowing what it means to accept the risks and understanding the resulting thrill, he enjoys every skydive as much as the passenger does if not more. According to Helge there are few things as rewarding as seeing that uncontrollable grin on a tandem passenger's face after an awesome skydive.
Helge got into skydiving to live and enjoy life and the experience has by far exceeded his expectations.

PJ Eales – Videographer
PJ.jpgPJ has been skydiving since December 2002 and has done just over 1000 skydives. In his time in the sport he has flown camera for various formation skydiving and freefly teams in both friendly competition and at the South African National Championships, helping them earn bronze, silver and gold medals along the way. He has also had the privilege of jumping at Perris Valley Skydiving and The World Freefall Convention in the USA – training with world class coaches and spending time in the wind tunnel.
PJ has two main loves in our sport: tandem video and canopy piloting. He’s the joker of the group, always inventing new ways to make our passengers laugh – he’s the true definition of the word “vidiot”. His other passion is canopy piloting and when he’s not in the sky playing with tandem pairs or editing videos on the ground he can be seen swooping the pond at JSC.

Vissie - Tandem Master/ FAA Master Rigger
Vissie.jpgI always dreamt of flying since I was a little boy. Finally got down to an old dropzone in Klerksdorp when I was 15 years old. Too young to skydive I started packing parachutes for extra pocket money, and when I turned 16 in ’90 I did it! Couldn’t stop ever since.
Now, I get to do this for a living, life was going nowhere in the rat race. I take people on the best life changing experience they will ever have, and live for every moment of it!
My parachute has opened just over 3100 times, without any major incidents.
There are always new ratings to strive for, but I’m a PASA Tandem and Jumpmaster, Rigger and Professional Exhibition Jumper. I have acquired most of my ratings in the USA.
The most rewarding moment, is seeing the smile on your face, after a good tandem skydive!
